thEscapeLANDSCAPE • ASTRO-LANDSCAPE
Join us for an immersive landscape and astro-landscape photography expedition through the high-altitude wilderness of Zanskar - one of the last truly remote frontiers in the trans-Himalayas. Crafted for dedicated visual storytellers seeking to capture dramatic geological scale and Bortle 1 dark skies, this high-altitude journey traces an epic overland arc starting in the verdant alpine basins of Srinagar, traversing the heart of Zanskar, and concluding amidst the arid moonscapes of Leh.
Trace the roaring Suru River as alpine greenery abruptly yields to jagged scree and glacial rivers. Frame the towering twin massifs of Mt. Nun (7,135 m) and Mt. Kun (7,077 m) bathed in golden alpenglow, mastering high-contrast directional mountain light and foreground glacial braided streams. Night dedicated to Milky Way and Star Trails.
Stand on the wind-sculpted vantage of Pensi La (4,400 m) looking down upon Drang-Drung Glacier - a colossal, winding river of ice and medial moraines. Compose layered daytime telephoto compressions before transitioning into deep blue hour and celestial wide-angles over the frozen expanse.
Camp at 14,800 ft beneath the sheer vertical ramparts of Gonbo Rangjon, the sacred standalone monolith rising abruptly from the riverbed. Experience uncompromised zero-light-pollution skies to capture high-definition Milky Way cores and luminous star trails anchored by the god-mountain's black silhouette.
Follow the dramatic Tsarap Chu gorge to document Phugtal Gompa - a 12th-century Buddhist monastery built like a honeycomb into the mouth of a massive limestone cave cliff. Balance harsh midday gorge shadows and soft interior temple butter-lamp glows, capturing timeless monastic life suspended in rock.
Overlook the braided plains of the Zanskar River from the hilltop ruins of the 11th-century Zangla Fort and Palace. Frame twilight architectural silhouettes against the rugged Zanskar Range and execute tracked celestial panoramas led personally by Nilakkhya Dutta.

Nilakkhya, an Official Nikon Creator, is a published landscape photographer from Delhi and has been in the photography arena for the last 14 years. Venturing into the Zanskar backcountry takes us to maximum elevations of 4,500 metres. Prior high-altitude or mountaineering experience is not required, but the thin, arid atmosphere requires hydration, electrolytes, careful pacing, avoidance of sudden exertion and windproof layers.
The dates are chosen around the seasonal cusp between late winter and early summer, a proven window for clear, dry nocturnal skies in the trans-Himalayas. Weather can shift without warning, so the daily itinerary retains field adaptability for cloud cover and optimal shooting conditions.
